Restorative yoga -what to expect from a practice?
The healing power of relaxation - in English and Polish in Budapest
RESTORATIVE YOGA is a slow and grounded practice, which helps the body heal and restore itself through long (10 - 20 minutes) holds. During restorative yoga practitioner is fully supported with bolsters, blankets, chairs and blocks. Thanks to this support, the body can gradually open in a passive way and prompt the parasymphatetic nervous system (rest & digest) to initiate a healing response. Benefits of restorative yoga are:
- passive stretch without strain on the muscles and ligaments
- improving circulation
- relaxation and restoration
- healing on the cellular level.

Restorative yoga class may, but don't have to, begin with a short spine warm up, which is then followed by a sequence of 3-5 poses. Props are essential! You would need yoga blocks (or thick books at home), bolsters ( or rolled duvets/ blankets/ sofa pillows), blankets. Walls, beds and chairs may come in handy too!
As the poses are held for a long time and require no effort, you may want to make sure that you stay warm throughout the practice - comfortable clothes and socks are welcome.
There is one main rule - relax. If you don't feel fully supported by the props, don't hesitate to ask the teacher for assistance.

Benefits of restorative poses by family
Majority of restorative yoga poses may be groupped in the following families: forward folds, backbends, twists, prone poses, inversions.
Let's look at some of their benefits.
Forward folds - calm down the mind, cool the body, soothe the nervous system, relieve anxiety, encourage introspection, stretch the back side of the body, increase circulation in the pelvic area and help to relieve menstrual pain.
Backbends - energise, invigorate, open the mind to new possibilities, relieve restlessness, stretch the front side of the body, help to open the chest area and release the tension held there, alleviate chronic back and neck pain.
Twists - release the stuck energy, refresh and energise, neutralise the spine, detoxify, improve digestion and increase metabolism.
Prone poses (lying on your belly, often combined with hip openers) - provide emotional release, reduce stress, fatigue and anxiety, help to easily fall asleep.
Inversions - increase immunity, improve circulation in the body, relax and restore body energy.
You should always keep in mind what you are going to do after your restorative class - partying all night may not be easy after forward folds and prone poses, immediate falling asleep could be problematic when you are full of energy after backbends.
Private yoga teacher can design a yoga class based on your needs and plans - that will restore your energy and help you continue your day afterwards.
