Class for beginners starts with a short (and explained) meditation. After that basic seating poses and breathing methods are taught. Then comes a time for standing poses, forward folds, twists and backbends, fully explained, at a slow pace. Use of props for support in the poses is explained too.
Class ends with a few minutes of relaxation.
Useful props are:
- yoga blocks or thick books
- bolster or rolled duvet/ blanket/ sofa pillow
- belt
- blankets
- wall.
If you would like to deepen your understanding of asanas, Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar is a must have book on your bookshelf.

Yoga and Ayurveda
In Ayurveda (holistic healing system from India, often called a sister of yoga) we can all be classified as embodiments of doshas. There are three of them:
Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Vata consists of air and ether (space). Some qualities of Vata manifesting in people are: slim and slender bodies, dry hair and skin, uneven, angular shapes, mental and physical hyperactivity, anxiety, low appetite and poor sleep.
Pitta consists of fire and water. Some qualities of Pitta manifesting in people are: muscular, medium size bodies, oily hair and skin, pointed shapes, determination, intelligence, impatience, strong appetite, short but sound sleep.
Kapha consists of earth and water. Some qualities of Kapha manifesting in people are: tall, large bodies, thick hair, beautiful light skin, rounded shapes, calmness, patience, compassion, balanced appetite, prolonged and deep sleep.
We are born with a certain proportion of doshas, called prakriti.
In some people one dosha is dominant, in others two doshas are approximately equal, in rare cases all three doshas are equally strong.
Unfortunately, during the course of our lives, we may lose our natural balance - due to our lifestyle or life events doshas may become stronger or weaker than they naturally were. This state is called vikriti.
To make matters more interesting, doshas may fall out of balance in an active (rajasic) or a passive (tamasic) way.
You can find a few examples of dosha imbalance here:
Vata
Rajasic: restless, noisy, disruptive
Tamasic: fearful, deceptive
Pitta
Rajasic: aggressive, reckless, irritable
Tamasic: hostile, resentful
Kapha
Rajasic: dominant, manipulative, overattached
Tamasic: stagnated, lethargic, depressed
Ideally, we want doshas to be balaced (sattvic) and as close as possible to our natural constitution (prakriti).
Luckily, we may balance them through our yoga practice - both what asanas we choose and how we perform them have an influence on doshas.
Even the beginner at yoga practice may benefit from the healing power of ayurveda with a help of a private yoga teacher.
After a consultation and performing dosha tests to reveal prakriti and vikriti, your teacher will be able to tailor your practice, taking into account any dosha balancing required.
